The Annotated Bibliography, is a significant step in the writing process, as it is intended to show the resources that you’ve collected and how they connect to the research question and the focus that your research is taking. This is a big part of why you should think forward about your project – to see how these resources could connect, and create an argument. This means that you should be able to show, not only the major argument that each resource is making but also how that resource supports your answer to and argument about the research question that you have posed. In other words, you should have critically analysed them (so see your Seminar Leader’s commentary on your CTA!). Please note: Because this part of the project is intended to help you prepare a strong, research-focused paper, your seminar leader will have the authority to reject any of the resources that you present, if they are not up to academic standards, or if they do not adequately connect to your proposal and research question (this is actually ultimately to your benefit and part of the assignment criteria).
this leads us finally to the Research Proposal, which is due as part of the Annotated Bibliography. The first thing that I want to say about a proposal is that it is not just about talikgn about something cool to research, a neat topic or an attention-getter. Instead, a research proposal is about articulating a well-considered and well-researched area of interest that will generate a clear and important topic and argument for your paper (a proposal really needs to have good research behind it). Your proposal has to take into consideration the needs of the larger project, and to articulate how you think that project might unfold. A research proposal is deceptively complex because, to do one well, you need to spend some time both thinking about your topic and doing some research on it before you are adequately prepared to begin writing your proposal.
This Research Proposal is intended to provide an opportunity for you to present to your Seminar Leader the project that you wish to engage in for your final paper, so it must reflect what you think that paper will be about (by presenting a reasoned argument, including evidence, about it). As I mentioned above, you will start this process with a research question which will be articulated as part of your proposal. This will be intended to provide shape not only to your research, but also to your proposal itself. Drawing on last week’s discussion, we can generate a research question such as:
