In a 600-800 (approximately) word essay, you’ll analyze a song you’ve chosen, and its lyrics, answering the following question:
How does this song convey its message, argument, or idea to its audience in a persuasive way through the use of the rhetorical modes and literary elements?
Success in proving the song has the message/argument/idea you say it does
A thesis statement that tells us the song’s message/argument/idea and names the rhetorical modes & literary elements the essay is going to discuss.
A body paragraph for each rhetorical mode or literary element you cover. (I recommend taking on just the two or three main, most important, or most frequently used rhetorical modes and/or literary elements. That will give you just two to three body paragraphs to write. Please note that your paragraphs will need to have more examples/be longer if you’re writing two rather than three.)
For each body paragraph:
Presence of an argument topic sentence that tells us what rhetorical mode/literary element the paragraph will discuss, and how you think the song writer’s use of it helps them communicate their song’s message/argument/idea.
Presence of relevant quotations from the song lyrics to serve as evidence that the rhetorical mode/literary element is present in the song. Remember, body paragraphs need a minimum of two pieces of evidence (more is better!).
Presence of analysis or explanation of the quotations to show us how those quotations are using the mode/element to do what you say it’s doing in your topic sentence.
Demonstration that you understand the rhetorical mode(s) and/or literary element(s) you analyze (and that you understand the difference between rhetorical modes and rhetorical appeals)
Organized paragraphs, an argument whose parts support and are connected to each other, and clarity at the sentence level.
