Please choose ONE of the following prompts:
How does cinema constitute a powerful medium for critiquing violations of human rights? Additionally, what tools do filmmakers use (mise-en-scène, symbols, images, sounds, silences, stories, the gaze, etc.) to underline their critique of human rights violations?
Critically reflect on the ways in which human rights cinema offers both a representation and subversion of human rights violations rooted in people’s race, gender, sexual, religious, and class-based identities shaped by their histories, geographies, and politics. In what ways does this cinema speak to the present moment?
What’s wrong with a state-centric international human rights enforcement? What’s the alternative? How and why have women’s bodies historically been targets of multiple forms of oppression and violence across the world? How have they challenged their oppression?
In their attempt to critique oppressive traditions, filmmakers have often been accused of Orientalizing their own or other people’s cultures. Would you agree/disagree? Why?
Essay writing guidelines and rubric:
This essay is designed to give you a space to write your way to an understanding of some of the major concepts explored in the course and to give me a way to discern that understanding.
Your essay must draw on TWO films and TWO separate readings ASSIGNED IN MODULES.
You must make connections between the films and readings that you choose for your essay as well as my lecture notes.
Please do not offer a plot summary in your essay, since as the reader of your essay, I have already viewed the films addressed in your essay.
Instead, what I am looking for is your analysis of the films using examples of specific scenes, plot details, and cinematic techniques from the films as well as references from the course readings to back up your claims.
The success of an essay stems from a clearly articulated argument that is comprehensively, logically, and concretely developed through the length of the essay, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of key issues and concepts to give fresh insights.
Your assumptions must be made explicit, backed by references to readings and films, and critically and convincingly interpreted.
While drawing on the readings, please provide the author’s name and page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence where you have cited the author’s words or ideas. Please remember to provide a list of works cited at the end of the essay.
You must pay attention to sequences of ideas, the transition between them, grammar, and syntax.
You must copy and paste the essay prompt at the top of your essay.
Your essay will be graded according to the rubric provided at the bottom of this assignment in canvas.
