How to do it:
You are required ONE ‘substantial’ post, about 200-250 words. When you write your post, start with a short title IN CAPITAL LETTERS that describes your post: make it intriguing and fun, attractive and ‘sexy’!. This title is how you will entice your classmates to reply to YOUR post!
For this discussion, you are also required to post TWO replies—each reply to a different post. You can of course do more than two! Your replies don’t need to be as substantial as your posts, but ‘nice!’ or ‘yes!’ or ‘lol’ is not enough. You do have the possibility of ‘liking’ a post or a reply–use that feature! A reply could be your agreeing with what they say and elaborating on that, adding a different example to their post, or even taking their idea and running with it! You can of course disagree!, but let’s be polite about it. This is NOT a reality show! Think of this as an online conversation.
What to ‘talk’ about:
After you have watched the title credits of Sex and the City, the beginning dance sequence of West Side Story, the margins of the city in The Mandalorian, and the hot summer day of Do the Right Thing, write a post talking about the ways the city is represented/depicted in these films and TV shows. Use these questions as a guide:
What do these clips choose to show in these scenes? What do they seem to focus on in regards to the urban? WHY do you think that is?
How are the formal elements (sound, camera angles, shots, framing, music, editing, lighting, etc.) helping in creating a certain image of the city? What is that image?
Of course, the urban images will vary in each clip…
