Hi everyone, my name is Elizabeth Iris Arroyo, but I have always used the name Iris in a personal setting amongst friends and family. I loved that when I started CSU Chico, I was given the option to choose a preferred name, and for once in my academic life I am actually using the name I’ve always used in my daily life, which I find kind of funny. I don’t have preferred gender pronouns and typically don’t identify myself as having a preferred pronoun.
As far as a dream job, I originally wanted to attend Le Cordon Bleu in my younger days, but because of my arthritis and the physical toll professional cooking would have had on my body, I didn’t end up going that route. I still love to cook and bake at home for my family and friends. I enjoy international dishes with robust complex flavors and am always looking up food videos, and recipes to test out new dishes and to improve upon what I already make. I also enjoy the technical aspect of food as well and am constantly researching the science behind it, different techniques, and cooking methods.
After CSU Chico I plan on attending law school so that I can pursue a career in ADA law and advocate for members of the community, with a goal of representing people from underrepresented socio-economically disadvantaged populations. I also have a daughter that utilizes services through our local school district’s SPED department, which is regularly in non-compliance and takes advantage of the fact that many of the families they’re serving are unaware of their legal rights within the special education system. Dealing with the people within that department was enough to motivate me to return to school and pursue a law degree.
I play several instruments and am a huge nerd when it comes to music, especially movie soundtracks and the work of John Williams. I wanted to originally major in music and one day play for a major symphony orchestra, like our locally based Los Angeles Phil Harmonic. I’m rusty, but still play for fun, and music helps me relax and zone out if I’m stressed. I guess music is my happy place. Although I didn’t end up pursuing music and will very likely never have the opportunity to join a professional orchestra, I have been fortunate enough to perform with some members of the LA Phil Harmonic which was really awesome and something I will always treasure.

My name is Yohana and I’m from Oxnard, California. I transferred from Ventura College 1.5 years ago and this is my last semester at Chico. Besides being a full-time student, I am also a mother of two wild boys, ages 6 & 10. I am currently working seven days a week for the Department of Veterans and Procter & Gamble. In both of my jobs, I am considered a “ security guard” however, I mostly do data entry. Chico State’s flexibility with the online sociology program has allowed me to do it all and I dove right into it, full throttle. My dream job would be to work as a youth mentor/counselor. I am currently going through a background process with the probation department in Ventura County for that exact position. I’m super stoked…It’s been a long time coming. I had previously taken a 10-year break from school due to life happening, children/work/etc. So, I’m super excited and look forward to finally kickstarting my career, actually enjoying work, working a little less, and of course, getting paid a little more. The last thing about me is that I am a kid at heart. I love skating, roller skating, playing sports (soccer/basketball), hiking, arts and crafts, spontaneous road trips, and a good book to read.
