Standard MLA style format
1,000-1,100 words plus works cited page.
Works Cited page with 2 source citations must be included for passing grade
the assigned reading and at least 1 additional source required from the library databases
Assignment – Structure and Development should reflect the descriptions below.
Essay #1 involves research on the assigned humanities topic.
Use PBSC’s electronic databases for literature, i.e. JStor, Academic Search Premier, Gale, etc., to find literary analyses written about any of the works we have read and discussed in class.
Avoid reviews of the literature, as well as popular websites, such as Wikipedia, Answer.com, About.com, Sparknotes, eHow, Associated Content. Ezinearticles.com, Suite101.com etc.
Use at least 1 outside source from the library databases besides the assigned reading to write an analysis of the assigned humanities’ topic.
The introductory paragraph should introduce the assigned. For a hook, you may use a quote, question, anecdote, or shocking information to attract the reader’s attention, but do not start arguing in the introductory paragraph. After the hook, develop a definition, brief summary of historical background and the current relevance of the assigned humanities topic.
The thesis should present an analytical point about the topic’s relevance to humanity and human nature. The thesis should answer questions, such as why is the topic relevant to humans?; How is the issue innate to humans, or how is it a learned cultural belief or value?; What is the relevance of the topic to humans survival, future existence, if any? , and so on.
Body paragraphs (2 to 3) should have an explicit topic sentence that presents part of the analytical point from the thesis. You also must integrate evidence in the form of quote, paraphrase, or summary from the work(s) and from one of the sources to assist in analyzing and supporting the analytical point. Last, body paragraph development should include an analytical discussion explaining how the evidence supports your thesis.
The conclusion should NOT simply repeat the thesis, but it should also NOT continue to argue and present more evidence. Instead, it should bring the reader full circle on the importance of your analysis of the work(s) and the points you have argued in the body paragraphs.
