Poems are written with strong and direct language in order to express a poet’s view, to be their voice and explore themes and ideas that are valuable and important to them. The poems ‘Caged Bird’, by Maya Angelou, and ‘Please Resist Me’, written by Luka Lesson, both explore the experiences of oppression and lack of freedom, however the similarities end when one speaks in metaphorical terms about being caged and the other speaks literally about migration and assimilation. Although these poems are written many decades apart, ‘Caged Bird’ in 1960 and ‘Please Resist Me’ in 2012, both speak about contemporary issues that are of vital importance in their respective periods of time.The main theme that is concurrent across both poems is one of oppression, being owned, captured or controlled and the lack of freedom individuals have through a loss of autonomy. ‘Caged Bird’ is a poem that recites Angelou’s experience through years of constant oppression and lack of freedom through a clever metaphor. This poem engages the audience by using a ‘bird’ as an analogy on her experience, as it feels like she is ‘trapped in a cage’. Her imagery of “Narrow cage… Bars of rage” emphasises that she is imprisoned in a small, confined space, and that these violent and angry bars are so frightening that no one would ever dare to escape. The bird is a gentle, sweet creature who has been frightened into submission, while Luka Lesson speaks in great contrast, about growing strong in the face of oppression, about building courage and seeking revenge by living proudly despite the control. In “Please Resist Me” Lesson states with boldness “Lock me in solitary confinement … when I come out I’ll be better than when I arrived…”, the audacity in these lines spells a revolutionary spirit in the face of oppression.
