Let’s start
putting together our publicity strategy. Choose one writer represented in your
catalog (it could be you) or a band or artist you’ve discovered, and put
together a one- or two-sentence “story” to define this writer for the
industry.

No one much likes writing bios or promo
one-sheets, least of all about themselves. Remember, the key is to identify the
story. It’s one of these:

what’s happening now
·
what has happened
·
who the writer is working with
·
who your writer or artist is—this could range from
where they are from (if it’s interesting or defining in some way), what their
background is (well-known musical family, child of famous politician, former
gang leader), to what their musical career is about (political activism,
spreading the gospel, opening up the metal market to female artists, etc.)
Now, identify the following:
· two national trade publications to
target for press release
· two local music papers or blogs to
target for press release or review
· two clubs in the nearest music
center for an industry showcase
· two industry conventions where
your writer could showcase or serve on a panel
Extra Credit: Identify contact people for
each item listed.

9.3: Identify One Publicity Opportunity in the Next Three Months
Identify one specific publicity
opportunity for the writer you chose in the previous assignment of this lesson.
Find an event that will occur in the next three months. This could be something
as simple as a local performance or an upcoming record release or even
something that you hope to make happen. Now, referring to our list from the
previous assignment, think of three other “events” that you could
arrange to occur within two weeks of that initial opportunity.
