In our reading in Cultural Engagement this week, Treat
(2019) discussed loving one’s neighbor, and Chediak (2019)
talked about making the Gospel sweeter. Discuss how we
can address core needs of encouragement, compassion,
and empowerment alongside material needs as a means of
loving one’s neighbor and adorning or making the Gospel
sweeter. Include your faith in this discussion.
Explain in your own words why Hook et al. (2017) advocate
for a shift from multicultural competence to multicultural
humility. Describe what is meant by a multicultural
orientation framework. Define and discuss key concepts
from our reading this week in Hook et al. regarding
multicultural orientation, cultural identity, and working on
cultural biases, power, and privilege. Do not use
subheadings. Write one paragraph on multicultural
orientation and one paragraph on loving your neighbor.

Discussion 1:
The way to address the core needs of encouragement, compassion, and
empowerment is by loving our neighbors, making the gospel sweeter, and
allowing work to be a way to care for God’s creation. Working is not
only for our own person gain and it’s not only to make money, but he has
called each one of us to a vocation. What a person has been called to
do, in that God can receive the glory from it because all that we do, we
should do it unto God and for God’s people. Work is a way that people
can show love to their neighbors in a personal and societal way. A way
that we can address the needs of other’s is by accepting the call and
work that God has placed on each of our lives. We should use our gifts
and talents for the glory of God (Chatraw & Prior, 2019). A person
being a compassionate or encouraging counselor is a way to meet the need
of a person. That is God’s way of working through a person. We were
created to bear God’s image and through our workmanship, God’s
compassion for his children should be shown. I believe that is loving
your neighbor. To make the gospel sweeter, we should provide evidence of
the gospel, win an audience, and adorn the gospel. Our good work allows
us to be evidence of God’s grace. Chediak said it best, we are saved
because of our good works but we are saved for good works (Chatraw &
Prior, 2019). Our audience is those around us, so when we show
compassion and empower others, that is a way to win people over to God.
Lastly, the gospel is made sweeter when we work well and do it with a
cheerful attitude. According to my faith, I believe when we are happy
with our lives and happy to serve people, that is what draws people to
God. God desires for us to enjoy our lives. Our work is what makes the
good news sweeter to people (Chatraw & Prior, 2019).
I think Hook et al advocates for a shift from multicultural
competence to multicultural humility because in order to have
multicultural competence, I think one should be able to be honest and
transparent with themselves to have an understating of their own
beliefs, values, and identity (Hook et al, 2017).. In my opinion it’s
hard to be open to understanding other’s competency without being fully
aware of our own cultural identity. A multicultural orientation
framework is what therapists can use to have guidance on how to handle
multicultural competencies. It is the basis for what therapists can use
to guide interventions and decisions based on a person’s cultural
identity and beliefs. Cultural self-awareness has to do with
multicultural orientation, cultural identity, and working on cultural
basis, power, and privilege. Working on cultural biases while being
aware of a person’s level of power and privilege is a part of the
multicultural orientation framework (Hook et al, 2017).
Discussion 2:
As Christians, we are required to do certain things and one of those
is loving our neighbor. When loving your neighbor that is not talking
about the person that lives directly beside you it is talking about
everyone that you meet every day. It is very important that we show love
to people because we never know who is watching us. When you work in an
environment with a lot of people your light must always shine because
you never know if you can lead to Christ by your actions (Chatraw and
Swallow 2019). When God is making you sweeter that means you fully
living by God’s word and allowing him to flow in your life. As
Christians, I don’t think people understand if we proclaim to be a
follower of Christ how much non-believers are watching how we are living
every day (Chatraw and Swallow). Because the grace of God teaches us to
work heartily unto the Lord (Col. 3:23) (Chatraw and Swallow 2019). For
me every day I’m working to please God through my actions and how I’m
living. In that work, I am making sure that I am showing love to the
people around me.
I think shifting from Multicultural competence to humility is often
we forgot who we are and where we come from (Hook 2017). I think that
aspect is very important in counseling to help other people we must
first understand ourselves and understand. The framework is really
breaking down the levels at which we need to understand our clients you
have cultural opportunities, cultural humility, and cultural comfort.
You must understand your client on all levels. During these sessions is
all about how the client feels and making them feel comfortable. One
thing is being culturally sensitive you must make sure that you are
approaching the conversation you are about to have with your client in a
way that they will not be offended by what you say (Hook 2017). Another
way we must approach the conversation is by being culturally
responsive. When being a therapist we must know and respond to how the
client feels because that is very important to whom we are helping.
Also, there is orientation this is very important because it’s letting
our client know that we can see the bigger picture (Hook 2017). We have
to understand the personality of the client and their life.
