DOES THE STUDENT ADDRESS ETHICAL /PHILOSOPHICAL ASPECTS?
Does the discussion primarily focus on the ethical or philosophic dimensions of this environmental issue? Does it adhere to the general focus of this class by exploring problems in ethics, values, obligations, rights, or conceptual debates?
For example: a scientist or policy-maker might ask how much we need to reduce carbon emissions to avoid harmful warming, or what the impact of continuing to burn fossil fuel could be on coral reefs or the economy. But a philosopher would ask: how is it ethical for fossil fuel executives to pursue short term personal profit when marginalized communities will suffer as a result, and the quality of life will be diminished for future generations? What is a person’s moral obligation to reduce harm to other humans or species in pursuing their own benefit?
Or, a medical researcher might investigate health benefits of eating a plant-based diet, or an economist might look at the cost/benefit of cutting forests for cattle grazing versus preserving them for tourism and recreation. But a philosopher would ask: do animals have the right to NOT be eaten by humans, or raised in captivity? Does the forest have intrinsic value as a living community that is greater than the value we derive from eating beef?
2) DOES THE STUDENT MAKE *DEBATABLE* POINTS, and AVOID SIMPLISTIC DESCRIPTION?
Environmental debates are immensely complicated, so projects should go beyond mere description of what is readily apparent (avoid self-evident statements). Rather than stating what that is obvious, your points should be genuinely debatable and call for proof in the following discussion.
3) DOES THE WRITING INCLUDE ANALYSIS & EVALUATION?
Student should identify and critically evaluate assumptions behind various positions on the issue, and examine a position’s consequences (is it plausible or not?)
Remember to argue, give reasons, present evidence, and support what you say. Presenting your own ideas is not simply a matter of stating your opinions and leaving it at that. You must defend and justify the claims you make. My interest is not so much in what you argue for, but how well you argue for it.
If you disagree with a position, make it clear exactly why you think the position is mistaken.
Quotes should also be explained in your own words: Don’t assume that the meaning of a quote is self-evident.
4) DOES THE STUDENT USE EVIDENCE/EXAMPLES
Support claims with relevant evidence. Use concrete examples throughout.
5) DOES THE STUDENT ACKNOWLEDGE COUNTER-ARGUMENTS?
Anticipate objections: imagine what those who object to your views would say, and then respond to those objections. State whatever weaknesses you see in your position and then do your best to defend and strengthen your views. Mention any other issues that need to be resolved in order for the position you take to be completely supported.
Be fair & accurate when criticizing other positions.
6) IS THE WRITING CLEAR AND WELL-ORGANIZED?
Think (and write) in paragraphs, not in sentences or pages. One sentence is never enough to constitute an argument with supporting reasons. On the other hand, if you find yourself going on for a page or more without a paragraph break, you are likely drifting from the main point of that paragraph.
Your writing should be professional, readable, and interesting (in other words, your language should be appropriate for college-level readers). The writing should require no or very few corrections to grammar, spelling and other mechanics. As with any piece of writing, both the structure and length of sentences and paragraphs should vary throughout to keep the prose from sounding monotonous.
