This was a really interesting interview, a few things stood out and one big piece of information really stood out to me. One thing that was said that i really liked was, ” If we can change the way they think, we can change the way they behave” that is a positive way of looking at the juvenile system, and an effective way to handle the informal proceedings. They have 12 steps that they follow which is awesome that they have a lengthy process and what appears a devoted staff to put the effort into these juvenile offenders. They have an awesome parent involvement process also, they include the parent’s input in the process which is great and is something that has not been around the whole time the juvenile system has been around, they previously had a lot of issues with this since the juvenile courts have been around. They also have a process for the juvenile when the parents are not involved and when the parents are unwilling to cooperate, which I believe is almost one of the most important pieces. While growing up I once associated myself with a few troublemakers, and now being older and understanding a lot more about the juvenile system and the theories that apply, they did not have involved parents, there was no parental supervision, and they simply did not seem to care a whole lot, and I believe that plays a huge part in juvenile delinquency. One piece of information that was said really stood out, was that in the Minority Diversion Program they not only focus on changing the mindset of these children, but they also do recreational activities, which I find important for kids. I believe that when children are kept busy with healthy extracurricular activities they are going to stay away from crime, it gives them a chance to build healthy relationships with other children and adults who will point them in the right direction. Growing up, the troublemaker kids were not involved with sports and did not really have much in the way of parental supervision, if any at all. Having this being part of the program is awesome, it gives them a chance to find a hobby, a sport, learn more about the culture, and gives them a chance at finding a healthy way to spend their time even after the program has passed. If I got the chance to ask him a question, I would ask him how he came up with this idea of the Minority Deversion program, what was his thought process in coming up with this system, get some ideas on what works and what does not, and go into more detail on how this program came about, and how more programs can be made for not only minoritys but also maybe the few juviniles that this does not work for.

What stood out to be the most was that Roy’s first plan of action for the juveniles that are not doing what they are supposed to be doing is sending a letter to the juvenile’s parents/guardians. This surprises me because in my opinion it leaves it up in the air if the letter gets lost in the mail. I believed the first step would be setting up a face-to-face meeting or video conference between the probational officer, the juvenile, and the parents/guardians. Why I believe this would be the first step is because it leaves less of a risk in terms of making sure the message is delivered. It also allows you to see the reaction of the parents/guardians when they get the message. Another thing that stood out to me is that with one of the rehabilitation programs at least one of the probational officers must go to the home of the offender every day during the course of the 10–15 day program known as night watch.
The question I would have asked Roy would be: If you could go talk to yourself when you was just getting into your career what would you tell yourself and do you feel that it would have helped you with troubled juveniles that might have been difficult for you?

The probation officer has many duties such as court supervision, setting up community service, setting up services they may need for counseling or behavior programs, having to coordinate weekly probationary checks, providing monthly drug assessments, and following up all general case management such as how the juvenile is doing in the home, are they doing their homework etc.To me the work load can become heavy depending on the type of case he may be handling and how many. What stood out the most was the weekly checkups he has to do. I feel that could be a handful depending on how many cases he takes on at one time. Like he said each case is different so it would be alot to maintaint to keep all the cases in order and making sure that the juveniles are staying on track even in some cases where he has to pop up at the home.
One question I would have asked is how many cases on average does he take on an average per month?
