Throughout history the invention of the steam engine, though helpful for the overall economy, wasn’t so great as it affected the environment, exploited child labor, and created harsh working environments for people.
Assignment Requirements
You will write a 5+ paragraph (3+ page) persuasive essay.
The essay MUST
respond to one of these four essential questions:
o Does power corrupt?
*Students must reference Hobbes and Locke (for context)
o Has imperialism had a positive or negative effect on indigenous people?
*Students must reference White Man’s Burden (for context)
o Is technology a blessing or a curse (1700-1900)?
o Is war ever justified?
*A specific war must be chosen; students must reference principles of a just war
(for context)
NOTE: Students who have previously completed a SHARP must write on a
different topic.
NOT be based on a U.S. perspective
have a thesis which
o responds to one of the four essential questions
o includes three divisions of proof which will be developed in the essay
o is underlined
be a minimum of 5 paragraphs/3 pages (more is OK, less is NOT)
have a properly formatted works cited page
cite at least three sources in the body of the essay and list those sources on the works
cited page
o at least two of the cited sources must be print sources
o at least one of the cited sources must be a reliable website
o you may NOT use Wikipedia or Wikis as a source
be submitted to turnitin.com
o both the essay drafts and final essay MUST be submitted to turnitin.com
Your final essay should have the following components in the following order on separate
sheets of paper:
a 5+ paragraph essay with the thesis underlined
a works cited page
a turnitin.com submission receipt.
You will work with both your World History and English teacher on this project.
If you do not have both an English II and a World History teacher right now, see your
teacher right away to discuss how you will work on this assignment.
If you completed a SHARP in a previous school year, you must write on a new topic.
The entire SHARP project is worth 10-15% of your 2 nd semester grade in BOTH history
and English.
The final SHARP essay is 60-70% of your total SHARP points (in BOTH history and
English).
The SHARP checkpoints are 30-40% of your total SHARP points (in BOTH history and
English).
