Discussion Posts (15%): These are meant to be your response to the week’s reading. I will post guiding questions or parameters for each week. These will be fairly loose as this is an opportunity for you to work on articulating your feelings and questions about the literature we are reading. (250-300 words).
For you discussion post, please focus on ONE of the following:
1) “Googling Ourselves”: Why we might we Google ourselves and what the strange or estranging effects of doing so might be? What might the poem ask or say about identity, the self, who someone is, or even the lyric “I”?
2) How does repetion in “I Sit and Sew” influence your reading of the poem? What impact does it have? What does it uncover about the speaker’s sense of identity?
3) How are ethno-cultural issues such as race, the immigrant experience, or oppression expressed in “Identity Card,” “Still I Rise,” or Escape From the Old Country”? (pick one of the poems)
4) “When the Beloved Asks, ‘What Would You Do If You Woke Up and I Was a Shark?'”: What is the poem’s controlling metaphor? What feelings about her lover and herself does the speaker communicate through the specific ways she develops and elaborates on that metaphor? Why a shark?
5) “The Woman Hanging from the 13th Floor Window” is full of a number of striking images/vignettes. Select one. What is it about the image that impacts you and how does it relate to your understanding of the poem’s overall meaning?
6) In Seamus Heaney’s poem “Digging,” what is digging, really?
7) For any of the poems, complete steps 1-8 outlined in the Analyzing Poetry slides (can be done in point form). Then, complete step 9 by composing a succinct and clear argument about the poem.
Requirement: include a complete and correct MLA works cited entry for your chosen poem.
For each discussion post, you will be provided with some questions to consider, but I also want to read about what you found interesting, surprising, moving, frustrating, beautiful, etc. I also want you to voice your questions. For some discussion posts, there will also be required elements listed (e.g. “compare 2 of the poems” or “include at least one paraphrase and at least one quotation”). These are opportunities to practice the writing skills you will have to demonstrate on the major essays and in the final exam as well as future classes you take.
Discussion posts will be graded primarily based on completion. I am looking for you to meaningfully engage with a reading or readings from that week, meet the length requirements, and to complete any required elements. If you do those things, you will receive full marks.
Discussion posts should be between 250-300 words and posted as a thread in the correct discussion forum
