A non-governmental organizations is a non-governmental organization which means it is not under the direction of a state-owned agency or institution that is controlled by the government. non-governmental organizations are driven by a group of volunteers or private parties who devote their work to the needs of others, or the environment. “Civil society in the United States encompasses a broad range of organizations that allow individuals to achieve their social, economic, and political aspirations by organizing themselves, unhindered, according to their own interests, needs, and priorities (U.S. Department of State, 2021)”. Initially non-governmental organizations only filled empty spaces in society and the environment that were not filled by the government, however, as time went on, non-governmental organizations grew and the number increased.
Types of non-government organizations: apart from advocacy and law, there are non-governmental organizations working in education and public health. “Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) provide valuable resources, tools and funding in the field of global health research (USDH, 2018)”. In charge of facilitation of education, health, vaccination, rehabilitation from drug dependence and others. In addition to advocacy and law, non-governmental organizations working in the environmental sector are also one of the non-governmental organizations that are currently experiencing development, along with the rise of climate change issues, generally this type of non-governmental organizations focuses on normalizing the normalization of the environment, air and water. A non-governmental organizations in the field of protecting children and women, this non-governmental organizations focuses on handling cases of violence against children and women, starting from campaigns, legal protection, consultations to recovery from trauma caused by violence. Furthermore, there are non-governmental organizations that deal with community social issues, which have a fairly broad scope. Starting from homelessness, juvenile delinquency/crime, prostitution, land and social conflicts such as ethnic minorities in society. In development and infrastructure, this type of non-governmental organizations focuses on infrastructure development such as roads, education & health facilities, public housing, cultural centers, agriculture and marine affairs. This non-governmental organization works to ensure all needs for welfare are met by the state.
Non-governmental organizations rely on a variety of sources to fund their projects, employee salaries, and operating costs. “Their sources of finance include donations from private individuals, private sector for-profit companies, philanthropic foundations, or grants from federal, state, or local government, sources of finance may also include foreign governments (U.S. Department of State, 2021)”. The annual budget of an international non-governmental organizations can be very high. Therefore, fundraising efforts are important for the existence and success of an non-governmental organizations. Other sources of funding include membership dues, sales of goods and services, assistance from private not-for-profit companies, philanthropic foundations, as well as donations from local community organizations. The main focus of non-governmental organization is to provide education and other assistance to communities around the world. Seeing this goal, non-governmental organizations have participated in improving educational infrastructure and facilities in several rural areas in developing countries. In addition, empowerment-oriented non-governmental organizations have helped a lot in the process of developing insights into equality, environmental and public health, and their activists work to promote social or political change on a broad scale.
Non-governmental organizations that are charitable and developmentalist in character must have frequent contact with the government, because the implementation of their programs does require them to be in contact with the government. At the very least, just to inform, community development programs or the provision of assistance will be carried out. On the other hand, non-governmental organizations that are oriented towards advocacy and transformative activities cannot separate themselves from their relationship with the government. “The NGOs collaborate by providing human and financial resources, material and equipment, and communication facilities (I A Yagub, 2017)”. When they have to fight for their clients in court, they will definitely meet with the government, at least the government representatives, prosecutors or judges. However, the most unfavorable relationship with the government occurs when their activities are judged to be too critical. In essence, an non-governmental organizations is an organization that comes from the community to deal with fields such as social, environmental and economic. Non-governmental organizations can also be financed by State institutions or Ministries, but their management is carried out independently.
